Travelling Alone In Benidorm
Since starting the Benidorm Travel Guide one question keeps popping up in my messages from time to time and thought it would be a good idea to write a blog from my own personal experiences, travelling alone in Benidorm, I’ve travelled to many a place Africa, Cuba, South America, Malta, Turkey and across mainland Europe and spent 6 years in the British Army so packing a bag and travelling was never an issue, but that was always with others.
Benidorm was the first place I had visited alone, and I will be honest it was a bit daunting, I think for myself it wasn’t the travelling side or safety it was more what I felt like awkwardness, like really fancying a nice meal and popping my glad rags on only to be sat there on my Jack Jones whilst those around me are with family and friends, for the first few days I would live out of McDonalds or get a takeaway and convince myself ‘this is what it’s all about, this is the life’ but I was only kidding myself.
As I spent more time in Benidorm alone I learnt that I was not the only solo traveller here and that i’m not the only guy who gets hungry and fancies a rack of ribs with a diet coke ( another thing I was doing was watching what I ordered so they did not think i was some greasy spoon loving Brit which to be honest I am and proud of it ) once I got over this awkwardness i realised its pretty cool being a solo traveller, I didn’t have to wait for others to finish before scoffing my pudding, I didn’t have to eat at set times as you would generally do with the family and best of all you meet people so much easier alone.
Benidorm is a vibrant place and meeting new people is pretty easy and being on your own it’s like being back in the pub back in the UK where you just randomly get chatting to people so soon enough you get confident and all those worries about travelling alone are just a distance past. Some tips I will pass on for those travelling to Benidorm alone would be things like bring a few books to fill in the gaps throughout the day like you have been out for dinner and are not going out for a few hours and don’t fancy a kip, it does get lonely so a book will help pass the time and keep you occupied, try and find a ‘local’ be it a cafe, bar or somewhere you eat lunch and get to know the staff and the locals, this is a great way to get rid of that alone traveller feeling and soon enough you build up that rapport with people and its like you have been there for years, Karaoke is another good ice breaker, if your an awesome singer you will be centre of attention and if you’re dire don’t worry it’s another ice breaker.
Safety is always an issue when travelling alone so can only stress to use common sense, don’t put yourself in situations which you don’t need to be ( like going the cash point at 4 in the morning ) and if you’re out late after a few cocktails get a taxi back to where you’re staying, travelling alone is an exciting thing to do and I enjoy it so much I have not travelled with anyone else in over 5 years now, that might sound selfish but it’s how I like it, having that freedom just to grab my bag and go to the airport is like being a kid on Christmas day for me, since January 2016 alone I have already flown 12 times and the feeling never gets old, hope you enjoyed reading and hope it helps some of you and also would love to hear your experiences of travelling alone.
