The Artichoke Fiesta in Benidorm

Benidorm’s Old Town is the most happening place in the third weekend of November. This is when the town holds its traditional Artichoke Fiesta – the Festa de la Carxofa. Not unlike a harvest festival, the artichoke festival or the fiesta of the Carxofa has become a great attraction along the lines of the Patron Saint’s Day in honor of the Virgin of Suffrage and St. James the Apostle.

The burning of artichokes in front of The Royal Queens Hotel is the highpoint of the fiesta. Usually, the festivities commence at ten in the night with the tasting of Bollos at the Costera del Barco.

The next day, the festival committee ensures that the fun heads to the Plaza del Calpi for the ‘PENJA of carxofa’. Usually at one in the afternoon, a sardinada is offered. By six in the evening, the gaiety winds down with a beautiful parade that heads to the centre of the old town. At ten, people gather to enjoy music. The activities then move on to the third day where flowers are offered to the Mare Déu of the Sofratge. The day ends with the faithful attending a Mass in the parish of San Jaime and Santa Ana.

And finally, the event is crowned and declared closed for the year after the crema of the carxofa at Plaza de la Constitución.
